Chris Brown has been arrested and charged in the U.K. over a 2023 assault allegation.
The singer, known for hits like “Forever” and “With You,” was taken into custody by the Metropolitan Police around 2 a.m. Thursday at a hotel in Manchester. Authorities have charged him with grievous bodily harm with intent, a serious criminal offense in the U.K.

The charge stems from an incident on February 19, 2023, at a venue in London’s Hanover Square. While police have not officially named the victim, music producer Abe Diaw filed a civil lawsuit in October 2023, alleging that Brown smashed a Don Julio 1942 tequila bottle over his head multiple times at TAPE nightclub.
Brown is currently in custody and is expected to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court at 10 a.m. Friday.
Brown’s Ongoing Legal Troubles
This incident adds to a long list of legal issues Brown has faced over the years:
- In 2009, he pleaded guilty to felony assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna, avoiding jail time through a plea deal.
- In 2013, he was arrested and later pleaded guilty to a felony assault in Washington, D.C.
- In 2016, he was involved in a nine-hour police standoff in California but was released without charges.
- In 2018, he was sued for alleged sexual assault (later settled) and arrested on an outstanding battery warrant (charges dropped).
- Most recently, in July 2024, Brown and Live Nation were hit with a $50 million lawsuit by fans who claimed they were attacked by Brown and his entourage after a concert in Texas.
