When it comes to Dancing With the Stars feedback, Robert Irwin has a secret judge — and it’s none other than Russell Crowe.
The 21-year-old wildlife conservationist, TV host, and son of the late Steve Irwin revealed that the Oscar-winning actor has been closely following his journey on the hit dance competition — and sending detailed critiques after every episode.
“I’m incredibly grateful for his support on this dancing journey,” Robert told Access Hollywood at the red carpet premiere of Crowe’s new film Nuremberg. “It’s actually been really cool because Russell will message after [each] performance. Instead of just saying, ‘That was a great dance,’ he’ll really delve into the detail — like, ‘Okay, these steps were great, love the lines, love the clarity in the storytelling.’ To get that kind of in-depth feedback is amazing, and it means a lot.”

A Lifelong Bond Between the Irwins and Russell Crowe
Crowe’s connection to the Irwin family runs deep — long before Robert was even born. The Gladiator star was a close friend of Steve Irwin, and the two shared a deep admiration for nature, wildlife, and storytelling.
“I’ve known him for as long as I’ve been alive,” Robert said. “Some of my earliest memories with Dad were also with Russell, which is really special.”
Robert’s mother, Terri Irwin, echoed that sentiment in an interview with PEOPLE, saying, “Russell was friends with Steve first, and when Steve passed, he really took our family under his wing. He looked after us, offered advice about the kids, and made sure we were okay.”
Robert added that Crowe’s stories about his late father have helped him piece together “an even better picture” of Steve Irwin, who died tragically in 2006 after a stingray accident.

Dancing to Honor His Father’s Legacy
Robert’s DWTS run has been filled with heartfelt moments dedicated to his late dad and the values the Irwin family stands for — positivity, enthusiasm, and conservation.
“I’m not a dancer,” Robert admitted. “I’m trying to tell my story through dance, to spread my message of passion and positivity. Having Russell support that means the world.”
During the season 34 premiere in September, Robert and his professional partner Witney Carson impressed the judges with a high-energy jive, complete with safari-themed outfits and playful animal sound effects — earning some of the top scores of the night.
Later, on “Dedication Night,” Robert broke hearts with a moving tribute to his mother, Terri, honoring her strength after Steve’s passing. “I struggle a lot with losing Dad,” he said through tears. “Mum always made sure Dad was present in our lives. I wanted to show her how proud he’d be of her.”
With support from his family — and thoughtful critiques from Russell Crowe — Robert Irwin continues to shine both on the dance floor and as a living tribute to his father’s remarkable legacy.
