Andrew Garfield Says He’d Return as Spider-Man—But Only If It’s “Very Weird” and Totally Unexpected

Could we see Andrew Garfield suit up as Spider-Man again? According to the actor himself, the answer is a maybe—but only under one condition: it’s got to get weird.

Speaking over the weekend at Middle East Film & Comic Con in Abu Dhabi, Garfield addressed the question fans have been asking since 2014: Would he ever return as Peter Parker?

“I loved playing Spider-Man,” Garfield said. “I would love to play the character again in some capacity, but I think it would have to be very weird. I would want to do something very unique and offbeat and surprising.”

Garfield praised the creative risks taken in the Spider-Verse animated films and hinted that if he were to return, it would need to echo that same level of innovation and unpredictability.

The Spider-Man Who Almost Got a Trilogy

Garfield portrayed the iconic web-slinger in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel. Despite strong performances and real-life chemistry with co-star Emma Stone, plans for a third film were shelved when Sony struck a new deal with Marvel, paving the way for Tom Holland’s version of the character.

This left Garfield as the only live-action Spider-Man who didn’t get to complete a trilogy.

“I kind of had this allergic response,” Garfield said in a 2024 episode of The A24 Podcast, reflecting on his early Spidey years. “I know I’m not ready for this level of scrutiny.”

A Comeback (Kind Of)

Fans were delighted when Garfield returned in a surprise multiverse crossover with Holland and Tobey Maguire in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The role gave Garfield’s Spider-Man a moment of redemption—and reminded audiences just how much they loved his take on the character.

Still, he’s not involved in Holland’s next outing, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has already begun development.

Could We See a Weird Spidey Multiverse Spin-Off?

While there’s nothing confirmed yet, Garfield’s openness to a “weird” and “offbeat” Spider-Man story could leave the door open for a standalone or multiverse adventure—especially if Sony continues to explore alternate Spider timelines.

And considering the success of projects like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and No Way Home, fans and studios alike might just be ready for a fresh (and strange) twist on a fan-favorite hero.
