What looked like a glittering night of celebration was, for Miley Cyrus, a night of silent suffering.
In a candid new interview on The Zane Lowe Interview on Apple Music, the pop star revealed she was experiencing a serious medical emergency during her NBC special Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party in 2023 — a ruptured ovarian cyst.
“I had a medical emergency,” Cyrus shared. “I had an ovarian cyst rupture, which we didn’t know exactly what was going on, so we did [the show] — but it was pretty traumatic, cause it was extremely excruciating. And I did the show anyway, but it was really, really hard on me.”

Despite being in agony, Cyrus never let it show. The special saw her cohosting and performing alongside her godmother Dolly Parton, sharing the stage for powerhouse duets like “Wrecking Ball,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You.” The evening also featured appearances by Sia, David Byrne, Paris Hilton, and cast members from Saturday Night Live, with SNL creator Lorne Michaels among the executive producers.
After the show, the toll of the experience left Cyrus questioning her future in music.
“I had dinner with Lorne [Michaels], and he said something that stuck with me,” she recalled. “He goes, ‘Six months. Everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves, and then we start to rebuild.’” That conversation, coming just after the holiday season, lit a fire in her. “He’s like, ‘You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me that they were quitting music. Everyone does this. Everyone has these traumatic experiences.’”

The advice clearly resonated.
Now, Cyrus is gearing up to release her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, alongside an accompanying film, both debuting on May 30. After weathering both physical and emotional storms, the pop icon is emerging stronger — and more creatively charged — than ever.
